HONORARY PRESIDENT

Professor Lord Wedderburn of Charlton QC, FBA: Emeritus Professor of Law (LSE), Hon degrees: Stockholm, Siena, Pavia;  Chancellor’s Medal for English Law (Cantb. 1949); Employment and Labour Law (comparative). Editorial Board of the International Labour Law Reports ongoing since 1975.

VICE-PRESIDENTS

Sue Ashtiany: Partner, Head of Employment, Nabarro. Sue joined Nabarro as a partner in 2001. She heads the employment department of the firm. Her practice consists of casework, transactions, projects and advisory work.

Sue is also a  trustee of the Equal Rights Trust, a Non-Executive Director of Channel 4 (and Member of the Audit Committee), a  member of the Advisory Board of the Centre for Diversity Studies Oxford Brookes  University , an Honorary Fellow of Harris Manchester College and a Member of the Advisory Panel of the Oxford Piano Festival.   She was also a Commissioner with the EOC until its demise in 2007.

Paul Davies QC: Vice-President and Cassel Professor of Commercial Law at the London School of Economics and Political Science. Former Editor of the Journal from 1977 to 2009. Also the Society's representative on the Executive Committee of the International Society for Labour Law and Social Security.

Simon Deakin: Professor of Law and Fellow of Peterhouse at the University of Cambridge.  Ex officio a member of the Executive Committee by virtue of being Editor of the Society's Journal, the Industrial Law Journal.

Simon studied Law for his undergraduate degree and Ph.D at Cambridge.  He was a Bigelow Fellow at the University of Chicago Law School (1986-7) and a lecturer at Queen Mary and Westfield College, London (1987-90), before joining the Cambridge Law Faculty in 1990, principally to teach labour law.  He was a co-editor of the British Journal of Industrial Relations between 2004 and 2009, and became editor of the Industrial Law Journal in 2009, having previously been a case note editor of the Journal.  His books include The Law of the Labour Market: Industrialization, Employment and Legal Evolution (2005, OUP, with Frank Wilkinson); Labour Law (5th. ed. 2009, Hart, with Gillian Morris); Tort Law (6th. ed., 2008, with Angus Johnston and Basil Markesinis); Capacitas: Contract Law and the Institutional Preconditions of a Market Economy (2009, Hart, edited with Alain Supiot); and Contracts, Cooperation and Competition: Studies in Economics, Management and Law (1995, OUP, edited with Jonathan Michie).  In 2001 he gave the ILO Social Policy Lectures at the Central European University, Budapest, and in 2008 he gave the Tanner Lectures at the University of Oxford.  He was elected to a Fellowship of the British Academy in 2005.   

Jennifer Eady QC: Former Chair (1998-2000) and Executive Committee member of the Society. Leading Barrister in Employment and Discrimination Law (called 1989, silk 2006), practising out of Old Square Chambers. County Court Recorder, member of the ACAS Council and Trustee of the Free Representation Unit and former Employment Judge (2001-2008).

Professor Sir Bob Hepple QC: Vice-President since 1975. Founding editor Industrial Law Journal (1972), and former Editor of the Bulletin of the Industrial Law Society (1968-72).   Emeritus Master of Clare College and Emeritus Professor of Law, University of Cambrdge, Bencher of Gray's Inn (delete ref to Blackstone}.

The Honourable Mr Justice Langstaff: Justice of the High Court (Queen's Bench Division) since 2005. Judge of the EAT since 2000. Formerly in practice as a QC specialising in employment, industrial injuries, and trade union law, and a member of the Society's Executive Committee from 1995-2005.

Stephen Levinson is a solicitor and partner with RadcliffesLeBrasseur. He has been practising employment law since the mid 70's and has had the conduct of a wide range of contentious employment cases from the tribunal to the House of Lords. He was a founder member of the Employment Committee of the Law Society also and is a former Treasurer of the Employment Lawyers Association and is currently a member of its International and Legislative & Policy committees.  He is a member of the editorial boards of Employment Law Briefing, Employment Law Journal and the Industrial Law Journal. A former Chairman of ILS he is now a Vice President. His outside interests include book collecting, fishing and watching cricket.

Judge Jeremy McMullen QC: Senior Judge of the Employment Appeal Tribunal, Deputy High Court Judge. ILS Chair 1989-93, Vice-President Board member of the ILJ. Former GMB officer. Wrote the first Workers' Handbook Rights at Work 1978; Co-author Labour Law Review 1989-2000; Employment Tribunal Procedure 2, 004; joint editor Employment Law Precedents 2002. Formerly Chair Employment Law Bar Association, Society of Labour Lawyers Employment Group and ILO Joint Panel, and part-time Employment Tribunal Chairman.

Professor R. W. Rideout LL.B., Ph.D (Lond): Vice-President since 1983. Chairman 1977-1980. Professor of Labour Law - UCL - since 1973. Part-time Chairman of Employment Tribunals since 1983. Deputy Chairman CAC 1978-2000. Author of 'Principles of Labour Law' and other books on employment and trade union law.

Michael Rubenstein has been Editor of the monthly Industrial Relations Law Reports since it was started in 1972 and Co-editor of Equal Opportunities Review  (www.eordirect.co.uk) since its inception in 1985. In October 2007, his company acquired EOR and he became its publisher. 

He is a former chairman, and now honorary vice-president, of the Industrial Law Society, a board member of the Equal Rights Trust, a trustee of the Wainwright Equal Opportunities Trust and a “distinguished supporter” of the British Humanist Association. 

He wrote the expert report on sexual harassment and the law for the European Commission and drafted its widely-used Code of Practice on measures to combat sexual harassment at work. He has acted as a consultant on discrimination and employment law to numerous international and national organisations including the United Nations, European Commission, ILO, World Bank and OECD. He was legal adviser to the Disability Rights Commission on the revised Code of Practice on access to goods, facilities and services and a member of the Council of Europe expert committee on the future of equality strategies between men and women. 
 

Melanie Tether: Vice President of the Society and former Chair. Barrister, Old Square Chambers, specialising in employment law, discrimination, education, administrative/judicial review. Publications : Equal pay section of Tolley's Employment Law. Speaks regularly on employment law.

  

OFFICERS, EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE: 2010/2011

Jason Galbraith-Marten (chair): Jason is a barrister at Cloisters Chambers and has specialised in employment and discrimination matters for nearly 20 years. He has appeared in a significant number of reported cases and lectures on all aspects of industrial law. He was named Employment Junior of the Year in 2009. Jason was a long-standing member of the Society before being elected to the committee some years ago, and to the position of Chair in 2010.

Martin Fodder (vice-chair): Barrister, Littleton Chambers, acts for claimants and respondents in all areas of employment law. Joint Editor of  the Employment and Equal Opportunities volumes of Atkin: Court Forms (Butterworths) (2007) and joint author of "Whistleblowing: the law and practice" OUP 2007. Contributor to Transfer of Undertakings, ed. Lewis TSM. I am keen to expand the range and number of shared presentations by academics and practitioners in order to develop the Society’s unique role as a bridge between those two groups.   
 
Carol Ihnatowicz (Secretary): HR practitioner and lay member at London Central.  Carol’s practice is at the interface between employment law and HR.
 
Paul Statham (Treasurer): Head of Employment Law Group, Pattinson & Brewer, acting mainly for claimants and Trades Unions.

Richard Arthur: Richard is Head of trade union law at Thompsons Solicitors, acting for trade unions and their members on industrial action and collective labour law issues

Lizzie Barmes:  Lizzie is Professor of Labour Law at Queen Mary University of London. She started her career in private practice as an employment and personal injury litigator, after which she spent four years as a Government Lawyer at the Law Commission working on damages for personal injury. During her time as an academic, first at UCL and now QMUL, Lizzie has published in the fields of equality, employment and constitutional law. Her current research projects are on regulating behavioural standards at work, positive action, especially at work, and the composition of the judiciary and the issues this raises about the legitimacy of judicial power.

Adam Creme: Head of Legal Services for UNISON where we have run many of the leading employment law cases.
 
Sandhya Drew: Employment law barrister at Tooks Chambers, recommended as a leading Junior by the Legal 500 and Chambers.  Current strong interest in issues of forced labour.  

Daniel Ellis:  Daniel is a solicitor and Partner in the Employment Department of Baker & McKenzie LLP.  He has a broad practice advising on all aspects of employment law, with a particular interest in collective employment issues (including trade union and works council issues and large-scale restructurings) and discrimination issues. 
 
Caspar Glyn: Caspar is an Employment Barrister at Cloisters. He is recommended as a leading practitioner by both the Chambers and the Legal which has described him as scintillatingly intellectual and fearsome in court.

Professor David Lewis: Professor of Employment Law and Programme Leader for the MA HRM & Employment Law at Middlesex University. Apart from writing, has contributed to commercial seminars and have experience as a consultant. I am a member of the Editorial Committee of the Industrial Law Journal and an ACAS arbitrator.
 
Lucy McLynn: Employment Partner at Bates Wells & Braithwaite London LLP, acting for both Claimants and Respondents.
 
Dr John McMullen: Partner, Short Richardson & Forth LLP; Professor of Labour Law, University of Leeds; Council member, ACAS.  John has 25 years experience in employment law, is a leading author in the field of employment law and his publications include Business Transfers and Employee Rights, the leading work on TUPE.
 
Anya Palmer: Barrister, Old Square Chambers specialising in employment law.  Before coming to the bar she worked for Stonewall, the campaign for lesbian and gay rights. 

David Scott:  David leads the Employment Team at Minster Law, a national law firm based in York.  He has broad practice acting for Claimants, Respondents and Trades Unions.
  
Mary Stacey:  Employment Judge, Deputy Chair Central Arbitration Committee, Recorder, and Chair of Industrial Law Society from 2006 to 2010.
 

CO-OPTED MEMBERS, EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE: 2010/2011

Dr. Eileen Fry:  Eileen is a Senior Lecturer at Northumbria University School of Law specialising in employment law.  She has extensive experience of teaching on undergraduate, postgraduate and professional courses both in the School of Law and in the Newcastle Business School and is currently supervising PhD students on employment law projects.  She formerly worked at the Transport and General Workers’ Union before completing research for a PhD in Social Security adjudication. 

Eileen has undertaken research in the field of unlawful discrimination in employment and, more recently, on the issue of dress and appearance codes at work.  She was co-opted as a member of the Executive Committee of the Industrial Law Society in 2006 and has organised the Society’s evening meeting programme in Newcastle since 2001.

Dr Stephen Hardy:  Details to follow

Rohan Pirani: Rohan is a member of Old Square chambers where he specialises in employment law. He also sits as an Employment Judge in Southampton. Before coming to the Bar he worked as a management consultant across Europe and undertook research into Equal pay in Canada. He has organised ILS talks in Bristol for many years.

Liesel Whitfield: Liesel is an Associate Solicitor at Irwin Mitchell LLP and has specialised in employment for over seven years, after qualifying in 2001 and practising general civil litigation for two years. Her practice is mainly respondent based and she advises on all aspects of employment law. She has worked in Sheffield throughout her legal career.

Liesel was the main employment adviser in the Heyday case, and also represented Anna Johns in the Court of Appeal against Solent SD Limited’s attempt to have default retirement age claims struck out. She has a particular interest in age discrimination matters and discrimination generally.”

The Society has also recently co-opted Professor Aileen McColgan, Shubha Banerjee, Navdeep Deol and James Tayler onto the Committee.  Their details will be posted on our web-site in due course.
